Frenchie's again and other dining out

We had several different food experiences last week so I thought I'd combine them in one post.

Wednesday night we returned to Frenchie's Wine Bar which we've decided is our favorite Paris restaurant.  We also discovered that it's easy to get a good table on a drizzly weeknight (and it probably helped that it was Halloween!).  We sat at a table overlooking the kitchen and it was great fun to watch the food preparation.  Here is what we ate:

Burrata with apple, squash, miso and candied almonds.  We've seen burrata on a number of menus and tried it a few times since we've been in Paris and this was the best combination.

The standout dish we ate was cauliflower and broccoli tempura with horseradish aioli.  The horseradish aioli added a spicy note to the dish.  It was so good we almost ordered a second serving!

Cavatelli with mushrooms and egg yolk.  Sorry we forgot to photograph before we broke the yolk!

Ravioli with braised rabbit, carrots and black olives.

Roasted pear with blue cheese, pomegranate and walnuts.

Saucisson brioche with jalapeno jus.  Yes, this as basically a hot dog baked into a brioche and it was delicious!

We ordered two desserts and I'm going to try to recreate both of them at home.  First, chocolate mousse with bacon ice cream and hazelnuts

And banoffee.  If you haven't heard of this, neither had I.  It's an English dessert pie with bananas, cream and toffee with a shortbread crust.  The server told me that I had to try it and it was fabulous!

And after:

Definitely our favorite Paris restaurant!

On Friday we explored the upper Marais which has great shopping.  We ended up at the Red Door again for a cocktail.  We love this place -- great atmosphere, nice people and really creative cocktails.  Then we went to a Thai restaurant around the corner.  It was a neighborhood place with as much takeout business as eat-in.  It was nice to eat "familiar" Thai dishes in Paris.

And, finally, on Saturday night, we ate at Bonhomie which is owned by the Red Door people.  We figured, if we liked their cocktail bar, we'd also like their restaurant.  And we were right!  The restaurant is in a gentrifying neighborhood off rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis.  Many restaurants and bars filled with young locals but still fairly gritty.

We enjoyed the Mediterranean small plates menu -- we ate lots of different and delicious vegetable dishes including roasted eggplant, peppers and onions, mushroom risotto, heritage tomatoes with olives and feta.  No photos this time but it was still a good restaurant and we'd recommend it.
